What is Gut Health?

What is gut health and why is it important?

Gut health seems to be a hot topic at the moment and rightly so. The research is diving deeper each day to find out more about the human microbiome and how it affects our daily function, recovery from illness, our sports performance and overall wellness.

What is GUT HEALTH?

Simply put, gut health is the effective digestion and absorption of food, the absence of GI illness, normal gut microbiome, an effective immune system and a state of general wellbeing and optimal performance.

Do you suffer from:

  • Bloating
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Diarrhoea or constipation on an ongoing basis
  • Gas
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain (when eating well)
  • Cravings
  •

    Take it a step further:

  • Poor performance on race day
  • Poor recovery and feeling of heavy limbs
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea or nausea when training or racing
  • Eczema or psoriasis
  •

These things are NOT normal, your body it trying to tell you that something is not right and its time to listen up.

The gut is a large organ that runs from your mouth all the way through to the rectum. Includes pancreas and liver as they help with digestion. It is not only stomach and intestines as most people believe.

Your gut microbiome is UNIQUE to you and is made up of trillions of bacteria, fungi and other microbes. It also plays a very important role in your health by helping control digestion and benefiting your immune system and many other aspects of health. What we eat, drink, sleep, medications, exercise and stress all affect the microbiome because they either build up and feed the good bacteria in the microbiome or kill them.

For the general population, improving gut health improves wellness, energy and confidence. It can kickstart the weight loss journey that is not working and it can even improve your day to day mood energy and sleep. It can clear your skin, improve hair growth and give you that overall “glow”.
