Shockwave Therapy

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Shockwave Therapy, or Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-surgical Physiotherapy treatment technique. It uses a device, which delivers high energy sound waves to the tissues within the body. It has been shown in studies to be effective, particularly in issues related to tendons. The process of receiving Shockwave treatment can be uncomfortable at the time but will often provide pain relief and aid return to function. Talk to your therapist throughout the procedure and you can take paracetamol afterwards if required.

Shockwave is well known for being a successful treatment option for patients who have not responded to other treatment techniques, such as soft tissue work and Physiotherapy exercises alone. Studies show it may be especially beneficial to patients who have chronic or persistent tendon pain, which often severely limits function and day to day activities/return to sport.

The treatment is best and most effective following a full clinical Physiotherapy assessment and done alongside exercises to strengthen and load the tendons. It is normal for Shockwave to benefit patients after 4-6 sessions, and it has been shown to have good long-term outcomes in studies at four-month follow ups.

Some examples of conditions that may benefit from Shockwave Therapy are:
• Achilles Tendon pain
• Plantar Fasciitis
• Hamstring Tendon pain
• Trochanteric Bursitis (Pain on the outside of the hip)
• Rotator Cuff Tendon Pain
• Tennis Elbow
• Jumpers/Runners Knee
